We all hope to leave the world a little better than we found it. By choosing to leave a gift in your Will to the Brissenden Trust, you can be certain that your kindness and generosity will help benefit the lives of local people.

The Brissenden Trust was founded on a legacy gift and is the reason we have had a positive impact on hundreds of people.

We understand that when you're planning your Will, your loved ones will be your highest priority. Once you've provided for those closest to you, it can be easier than you think to include a gift in your Will.

3 simple steps

There are just 3 simple steps to leaving a legacy gift in your Will

Step 1: Make a note of our charity details

You'll need our full name and details to ensure the gift reaches us. These are:

Brissenden Trust, registered charity number: 253760.

Registered address: Brissenden Trust, c/o Gibbons Mannington & Phipps, 82 High Street, Tenterden, KENT, TN30 6JG

Step 2: Choose the type of gift you’d like to give

There are two main ways to include a gift:

A residuary gift is a percentage or share of the balance of your estate once all other payments and gifts have been made.

A pecuniary gift is a fixed amount of money. To ensure a pecuniary gift retains its value, read our FAQ, ‘How can I make sure my gift maintains its value over time?’, below.

Step 3: Write or amend your Will

The last step is to visit a solicitor to have your Will drawn up or adjusted to include your gift to the Brissenden Trust.

If you don’t have a solicitor you can find one via the Law Society’s website here.

If you’re drawing up a Will for the first time, here is a handy guide from the Law Society with everything you need to know.

Frequenly asked questions

5 commonly asked questions:

I don’t have a Will; what should I do?

Putting a Will together is straightforward and doesn’t need to be expensive.

If you haven’t got a Will yet, we recommend using a qualified solicitor to write it for you. Do-it-yourself Wills may seem inexpensive, but they’re not always watertight, which can cause complications and lead to unexpected costs further down the line.

By appointing a professional adviser, such as a solicitor, you can ensure that your Will is written properly and meets your unique requirements.

How do I amend my Will to include a gift to the Brissenden Trust?

We recommend using a qualified solicitor to amend an existing Will. A solicitor can advise you about including the Brissenden Trust in your Will and the specific wording you should use.

I am an executor; where do I send the legacy payment?

All correspondence should be emailed to brissendentrust@gmail.com or posted to Brissenden Trust, c/o Gibbons Mannington & Phipps 82 High Street, Tenterden, KENT, TN30 6JG. Cheques should be made payable to the ‘Brissenden Trust’.

How can I make sure my gift maintains its value over time?

You can leave a residuary gift (a share of what’s left over after your debts have been paid and your wishes carried out), which will hold its value better than a standard pecuniary gift. If you want to leave a pecuniary gift that retains its value, it can be linked to the index of retail prices, allowing your gift to keep its value in line with inflation.

If you’d like to leave an index-linked pecuniary, the suggested wording is:

“I give to the Brissenden Trust (‘the Trust’) of 82 High Street, Tenterden, KENT, TN30 6JG, registered charity no. 253760, the sum of £ (INSERT AMOUNT) or such larger sum as my executors calculate to have the same value at my death as the figure specified at the date of this (INSERT either ‘Will’ or ‘Codicil date’)".

What if my circumstances change?

We understand that things may change, and you may need to remove the Brissenden Trust from your Will. You can change your mind at any time, and we will respect your decision. We just ask that you inform us if you change your mind.
